The newly launched online language‑learning business wellreadgerman required a distinctive set of logos to help it stand out in the competitive language services market. In addition to offering regular classes in German as a foreign language, wellreadgerman also offers specialised classes where philosophy, literature, and history are explored through the German language.
My solution was to develop a set of brand assets rooted in literary heritage and classical aesthetics, creating a look that feels familiar to the target audience while distinguishing the brand from competitors focused solely on regular language classes.
Typography
With inspiration from classic literature and book design, the typeface Libre Baskerville were chosen for headlines, accent text, and body text, while EB Garamond written with small caps was chosen for sub-headlines. The san-serif typeface Urbanist was chosen as body text for digital applications, to achieve better legibility on screens.
Colours
The colour palette features mature burgundy and royal blue as its primary colours, both deeply associated with tradition, history, and sophistication. Black is reserved solely for text, ensuring the brand avoids a harsh or overly modern expression. To ensure accessibility, the palette has been structured so that any light shade can be paired with any dark shade while still meeting web accessibility guidelines for sufficient contrast.
The logomark
The goal of the logomark was to strike the perfect balance between simplicity and clarity, ensuring that the essence of the business is clearly conveyed through the logomark. By incorporating details such as books, dialogue, and a subtle ‘w’, the logomark becomes both memorable and communicative.
Logo details
Elements from the typeface have been incorporated into the logomark to create a unified and coherent look between the logo and the mark.
